On the weather report on this site why is it the vector arrow is correct but the direction in degress of compass points is in the opposite direction ?

Ah yes Juan and today we have 17mph winds from N/A direction too. Impressive!

What really really bothers me is that this evening we will staring a Waning Gibbous in the face!

...and now the degrees and compass points are correct but the wind vector is reversed. How strange !!

So why did the moon look 10 x bigger when it rose last evening than it does this morning, 12 hours later ?

Crikey! Thanks for bringing it to our attention, I'll speak to RAF Wittering about this. Probably that's why their jets have been going off in the wrong direction this morning and are having to turn around for their daily excercise out over the Wash.

Seriously - I haven't a clue, but thanks Juan for taking the interest in the weather reports - they are often quite accurate. But doesn't the image show the direction FROM where the wind is blowing rather than TO where its blowing?

As to the reason for the "N/A" there is no image available to accurately represent the current direction being reported - it might lie between one or the other for example.

Yes, CB, you are correct the correct protocol for reporting wind is the direction"from" where it blows.
The style of arrow used makes it appear more like a weather vane so should be pointing into the wind direction rather than down wind.

I suppose the display could be considered correct after all.

It was just more noticeable the other day when the wind was reported from the NNE when it was obviously a SWly wind in reality.

Oh well, back to counting bottle tops !!!

Now that's the best bit of backpedaling I've seen for years.
Keep up the good work Juan. Every forum should have one!!

Have you tried backpedalling ? It actually does not move you in any direction whatsoever. So if you mean I have reversed my viewpoint you are wrong.

The vector arrow pivots around its centre in the syle of a wind vane and should thereore point in the direction the wind is coming FROM. To be absolutely correct, the arrow should pivot about its tip at the centre point of the circle and then point in the direction the wind is going TO.

I should know. I have more wind than most !!!!!
