Did anyoneelse read in the paper that Crowland Caravans has put in planning proposals for a caravan touring park with playpark and other facilities. They want to encourage tourists to Crowland. I think this could be great what does anyone think about this proposal?

Nice one!

Anything that raises the profile of Crowland in a positive way has to be a good thing.
Crowland is steeped in history yet we only hear of the 8th century Abbey and our 14th Century Trinity Bridge. What of the medieval attempts at drainage and some marks of Roman hydraulics? Our friends across the pond would wet themselves at the prospect of touching something built in 800AD. Trust me....

Crowland needs to be on the tourist map!!

I have to tell you it is already on the tourist map but we don't make enough of it. Go to the Abbey and read the visitors book. People come from all over the world to our Abbey. Also, our self catering apartment has been fully booked since the beginning of March and is until Sept. Most of the visitors are holiday makers and this week we've taken 2 repeat bookings from people who enjoyed their stay so much and still have places they want to see.

I'd like to see one of the empty shops utilised to put up a display and advertise the local facilities and services plus local events and act as a community advertising board as there isn't really one that is easily accessible now. Local walks, wildlife features, sporting facilities etc could all be featured in one place. Visitors would not know about the one in the post office.

in this depression I think tourism could be a lifesaver for Crowland businesses.

Don't think we are actually in a "depression", more a recession.. not so depressing.

Come on guys !! This thread started as a positive thought and should be embraced not run down by "nay sayers " like you two !!

I agree we are already on the tourist map but mainly by Silver Safaris passing through.
I am sure, even then they do not see all the history.

Could a vacant shop become a proper tourist centre ?
Could the river areas be better utilised - fishing ? boating ? water taxi to Spalding or Deeping.

It is a great idea and Crowland has much to offer if the opportunity can be seized.

A great proposal and one which should be supported !!!

I think a vacant shop could well become a proper tourist place. You are right about silver surfers but they do spend a bit of money in the town. It's mainly the older generation who have the money to spare now anyway.

I also think a bit of thought needs to go into tourism for Crowland. Yes we have the history, but more is needed and boating and water taxi is a great start. There is already fishing going on. An empty shop could be a tourist information point with old photos, stories of the area. Maybe a tourist quiz trail around Crowland where people solve clues to get to the next interesting point.

The old upholsterer's next to the hardware shop is up for let ?!?
Barbersdrove - as you are already in the tourist industry do you have any contacts with the Tourist Board ?

(BTW, I don't think we can become Surf City of Lincolnshire - Silver or any other colour !!)
