'Come live with me and be my love'
I think that this must be the most used line in time
The words were used by Sir Walter Raleigh, Christopher Marlowe and John Donne.
In more recent times C Day Lewis, Eddie Arnold, Marvyn Gaye and Roy Clark (is this the same man who wrote last of the summer wine)
Most of the writing whether it be for poems or songs talks of the joys of love.
My personal favorite is by Roy Clark
Come live with me and be my love
Share my bread and wine
Be wife to me, be life to me, be mine.
Come live with me and be my love
Let our dreams combine
Be mate to me, be fate to me, be mine.
With these hands I'll build a roof
To shield your head
And with these hands
I'll carve the wood for a baby bed.
Come live with me and be my love
Share my bread and wine
Be part of me, the heart of me, be mine.
I'll try to do my best for you
I'll promise you
I'll laugh with you, I'll cry with you, my whole life through.
Come live with me and be my love
Share my bread and wine
Be part of me, the heart of me, be mine....
A rather more discordant note is struck by Raleigh as the vigour of youth gives way to old age
and for twentieth century defiance no one can top Roger McGough (of The Scaffold fame)who wrote
come live with me and be my love
I keep a flat for mating
there's half an hour before the bus
shall we do it while we're waiting
