Concentration on the Decline
A recent survey by Lloyds TSB Insurance shows that we are simply not paying attention compared to 10 years ago. As a result, minor accidents in the home are on the increase. Included among these are door keys being misplaced, pans left on the cooker hob until they overflow and burn, and baths left running until they flood the bathroom floor.
According to the survey a person's average attention span is no more than 5 minutes and 7 seconds, well under half the 12 minutes recorded 10 years previous. Many of the people involved in the study blamed other distractions such as being too busy, worrying about work, and a general increase in stress levels.
Other common mishaps reported were forgetting to turn off the oven, failing to switch off a laptop left on the bed before going to sleep at night, and forgetting to switch off hair straightners. The occurance of a majority of accidents, according to the Lloyds TSB Insurance study, occur at 7:55am when many people are gettting ready for work, or are about to take the children to school.
A quarter of all the people surveyed also reported that they had problems remembering names of a close friend or relative. The good news is that the research found that the over 50s age group faired much better, indicating that the issues are not age-related, but down to a hectic lifestyle.
Lifestyles & attitudes of the over 50s
- The over 50s age group are most likely to rate their quality of life as "average" or "high".
- The over 55s are the group most likely to be doing everything, or most things they want to do.
- Half of over 50s surveyed said they are living their life exactly the way they wanted.
- The over 50s are the age group most likely to make a complaint about poor service.
- 50-somethings think they’ve got it best.
- 81.9% of over 50s surveyed said they would claim on their insurance if their home was vandalised.
- Over 50s are more concerned about natural disasters, while the over 60s and 70s are more concerned with vandalism.
- 60% of over 50s would like to join or are already members of a neighbourhood watch scheme.
Club Events
The Crowland Scalextric Club
Since the club started back in September, the attendance numbers have slowly increased and everyone involved is having a really great time.
David Rowlett, Crowland Scalextric Club organiser, told us that it's great to see children as young as three years old getting stuck in and having a go. "It's been very encouraging by all the support we have received, especially from the Scout Hut Committee and Crowland Links," said David.
"The club has taken nearly four months to get off the ground. Our aim is to run a self-funding club, with any profit put back into the club to provide new cars and, hopefully, some competition prizes when we get more established."
David's involvement with Scalextric started when he was a young boy, setting up a track in his bedroom. He got back into Scalextric about 3 years ago and is now looking to get younger people in the local region interested in racing. "Crowland seems to lack facilities for the younger generation", he said. "So I decided to form the Scalextric Club in order that families can come along and have some fun."
Comments about the new club have been very positive, so much so, that David has booked the Scout Hut up to the end of January, 2009. The club is already becoming self-funding and they have already purchased four new race cars to add to the club's racing fleet.
David goes on to say that the races run are often endurance competitions, where the race ends after a set length of time. "In our case, this is 3 miniutes. If you crash then a nice friendly race marshal will happily return your car to the track. If there are no marshals available then the competition becomes a crash and burn event, meaning that if you crash or go off the track then you are out of the competition."
If you would like to make comment or give suggestion about the club then you can do this in the Scalextric Group Forum.

1st Crowland Scout Group
Activities For All Ages
The 1st Crowland Scout Group re-formed in May 2005 after a 5-year break, and since then has been steadily growing in numbers.

Based at the Scout Hut in Snowden Fields, Crowland, the group has been involved in a number of activities over the past year. The Cub pack has taken part in a wide variety of activities. They were taught some basic first aid skills and also learned about safety in and around the home.
Their creative talents were also put to work making bat-boxes and posters promoting scouting - these were displayed at the Crowland Show in June. Into the summer and the group had lots of fun pond dipping, aided and supported by the Crowland Wildlife Group. They also tried their hands at taboganning [sledging] and climbing at Tallington Lakes - numerous activities with a lot of fun.

Crowland resident Jeff Beardwell has been involved with the group for just over a year as a leader in the Cub Pack. "I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, and found the time spent with the young people very rewarding," said Jeff.
"Adult help is essential to run a Scout group, and without helpers who are able to give their time voluntarily, the group would not exist."
There are many ways adults can get involved: as a leader-helper in any of the three sections, or as a member of the Group Executive Committee, helping with fundraising ideas. No previous skills or experience are necessary. Relevant training will be provided.
If anyone would like to volunteer, or requires further information, you can contact Jeff by email at jeffbeardwell (at) btinternet (dot) com or send him a private message (username “Baloo”) on the Crowland-Links Forums. You can also post in the "Village Green" forum (login to post).
Affected by the Credit Crisis?
The political and global reasons causing the so-called credit crunch are often the least of people's concern as they look to see how they can make ends meet. The sense of desperation for some facing house repossession as their mortgaged property purchase becomes a millstone around the neck rather than the investment certainty they believed it to be.
The easy availability of credit has left many with a financial hangover, and those that lent took the profit and are moving on to other forms of money-making. It is now inevitable that many in the UK will have to change their habits; that the shop-and-spend culture goes into steep decline, and that the credit card consumer will just have to wait for their next "must-have" purchase.
If you have been hit by the current issues, and looking for help or advice, the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is a good place to start - it has support centres around the country. Follow the Read More link for more information...

The family of hedgehogs we have had around all summer even delayed going into hibernation. They were hunting for food well into late October. This family included at least one baby that we feel will find it difficult to survive the winter. It was even seen out in broad daylight searching for food. In a bid to improve his chances we gave him a few scraps of meat which he ate with a great many contented noises.
