I think they are after crane fly larvae. My lawn is covered in small holes (and a few larger ones as puppy has discovered the joys of excavation).

Yes, we've had them too. They come along and take over the feeders and make such a din. I love to see them, they are, as you say, just like a gang of teenagers

We had a gang of starlings in the other day. All fighting for the bird bath!

Once they all finished a flock of sparrows swept in and started the same routine in the bird bath.

They certainly made me smile!

Lucky you and what a great (excuse the pun) picture!
I had a flock of Long Tailed Tits in my garden yesterday. While I was avidly watching them through binoculars, puppy was eating the doormat. You win some, you lose some.

pleased to see you have a woodpecker in your garden ,what sort was it BD ? Since the spring there has been a Green woodpecker in the church yard ocasionlly flying over the Kissing ground but i have yet to see it. I am sure it is a g'woodpecker as it makes a yapping sound as it flies. Lets hope yours becomes a regular visitor BD. Philip.

Hi Philp J.

The Green Woody was a regular visitor to us for some time this year probing for ants on the lawn - haven't seen much in the last few months. The Great Spotted were here as a pair (I see the piccy is of the female) for some time in the back garden, again haven't seen them for a couple of months - but often heard them, but not recently.

If it's of interest just a couple of days ago there were a pair of Sparrow Hawks doing a leisurely flypast - one landed in a nearby tree but the other wanted to move on.

You know where we are

It was the one in the picture so I think thats the great spotted. Am I right? We've also had the Sparrowhawk here. It moves with such speed it's scary! The last time we saw it (just) it flew past the bird feeders and was so fast we couldn't tell if it had picked one off or not. We think it had the baby wood pigeon too. It was sitting in the nest then just feathers all over the foot of the horse chestnut tree

Woodpeckers!

Lucky you. I have yet to see any in Harvester Way.

Its intresting that the Sparrowhawk numbers appear to be increasing. This can only mean that the general bird population is increasing to.

So more Sparrow Hawks = good news
