I have three baby blackbirds in my garden. As it is raining today, they are sitting under the bushes looking rather sad. Some mealworms and raisins should cheer them up (pre-soaked of course). The resident cat is sleeping indoors. Even if she is out, they are quite safe. I have planted cat mint, so she prefers to chill out in that instead of chasing birds. The starlings were alarmed to find a jackdaw on the birdtable this morning. I have a soft spot for the jackdaw as my father had one for a pet in the late 1930's and I remember seeing pictures of it on his shoulder looking into his ears. Can't think what it expected to find. He told me that it would roost at night on the bar of the cistern in the outside toilet.

Woodpecker . Has anyone seen the woodpecker which i think is resident in the churchyard?, it sounds very much like a Green woodpecker. It often ventures into the Kissing ground feild close to the chase but i have not managed to see it yet.

The Greenwoodpecker is often on our lawn. It seems to spend a lot of time in the horse chestnut trees behind Peterborough Road and Broadway. It's distictive laugh is heard often coming from there. Those trees being very close to my garden.
Last year a female was on the bird bath on the back lawn with two babies.

One of the greatest things of having a garden is the fact that I can sit and watch the local birdlife go about their business.

The Sparrows all ways make me smile and we seem to be in the middle of a long and protracted turf war amongst the local Blackbirds.

I heard and saw a green woodpecker on the Snowden Field last night.
Our blackbirds are getting cheeky. For the last two days one has come into the house. I think they may know where I keep the food!

Could be it has a second brood or its nest was destroyed or raided and the brave little thing is having another attempt at breeding.

Does anyone else give their garden birds names? I have a very tall thrush called "Usain" after Mr Bolt as it runs exceedingly fast.

Very interesting......
Not strictly a garden bird but we have a turkey with only one leg called "Thrombo"..... cos it's a slow moving clot!

We're going to eat the other leg next Christmas!!

Avian 'hoodies' seen in Crowland!

Have you seen gangs of adolescent starlings in your garden? They congregate in large groups, squabble noisily (especially over food)and seem to be wearing hoods as they have adult feathers on their body but their heads are still juvenile brown. Adult bodies but childish heads- just like teenagers!
