Hi Andy, I'm not a Lions member and so far I've not had occasion to use their services but I just thought I would stop by to say hello and welcome to the site. I feel very positive about this site and feel sure that it has all the potential to be a very good community resource. As someone who dpesn;t know much about the Lions i thought it might be a good idea to post on here just what the Lions are all about, how people could get involved or how to access your services.

Anyway, welcome to our online community.

Julie

Hi Barbersdrove: thanks for your positive comments. We will be adding new features over time, but in the meantime glad you find things here useful. You've got a Karma Point!

Yes, I would find that useful if Andy or the Group Moderator could give us an outline about the Lions.

Hi Andy: Just like to mention that member Annie Oakley set up the Group - but I know what you mean all this needs to run smoothly, so I'm often in the background making sure all the technology works

Re: A ROARING hello from Crowland Lions 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 2
Who are Lions? & what do we do?

Well where do I start!

We are a group of individuals some working some retired, male and female and all over 18 (and in some cases by a long margin!).

People join Lions for different reasons but one theme that does run through everyone's reasons to join Lions and that is to make a difference in some small way to the community we live in.

Basically our activities can be split into two:

Social & Charitable

Let’s start with the charitable side.

As a Lions Club we have (as do all Lions Clubs across the world) have a motto "we serve" and that sums up exactly what we are about. Since June this year we have given financial support to 11 different organisations which are based in and around Crowland or can have a benefit to our community. We also frequently offer manpower to other organisations e.g. the Crowland Xmas Lights appeal family disco where we helped man the bar. We also run a community bus; you may have seen it running around town. So far since its purchase it has had over 16,000 passengers and last month alone it had 16 outings. This bus runs on donations from the public and our own fund raising efforts.

All this activity only happens because we are busy fund raising and we are now in our busiest fund raising period with 24 different nights/days events, by Christmas, to raise funds for us to give away to worthy causes. A lot of our financial support goes unreported as we will support individuals in need of help and it is inappropriate to advertise this support.

Then we have our Social side. We have a full diary of Social events through out the year culminating in our annual charter celebration dinner in June (this years attended by 92 people – a good excuse to get dressed up for!).

We hold business meetings every 2nd week on a Wednesday at the British Legion and I’m proud to say ours are not stuffy affairs, as has often been commented on by vesting Lions Clubs. Oh yes the bantering is first class and funny!

In a nut shell we enjoy ourselves in what ever we do.

If any one wants to find out more about us then simply come to a meeting. It really is the best way to find out what we are all about. Please message me on this forum for further details.

A rather long reply that really does not even start to explain what Lions are about. To find out even more about us take a visit to http://www.lionsmd105.org

I’ve been a Lion now for almost two years and I wish I had joined sooner!

thanks for that Andy, it sounds like a really good community group. Can I ask a question regarding the transport side. I have an elderly friend who is registered blind. She uses the bus to go into Pborough but on occassion she has a dr's appointment or suchlike I try to offer her a lift. If i was unable to do it would this be something the Lions could assist with and if so how do we access the scheme?

Andy, this sounds excellent. How can I get in touch with you to discuss some ideas that the Scout group has that they need help with?

The bus is generally used by groups and we either provide a driver or the group supply a driver, subject to conditions. As regards to your friend are we talking about a local run IE to the doctors at the Snowden playing fields? Our biggest problem is access to drivers during working hours however saying that if you can supply me with more details I'm sure we can can come up with some kind of help. I think it may be wise to PM me with any further details.

We also have a close working relationship with Crowland Cares and they may be in a better position to help you friend. If you want I can discuss this matter with Crowland Cares as well and I'm sure between each group we can come up with an answer.
