A1073 - Road Closures & Diversions in the Crowland Region in JuneDisruptions and diversions on the A1073 are set to start on Monday 29 June. Work is expected to take 3 weeks. The good news is that all three contractors have planned their improvement work to minimise disruptions. Peterborough City Council will be repatching the A1073 from the B1443 at Masons Bridge to Wrights Drove, in addition to work being carried out by Lincolnshire County Council and Morgan Est. Structural patching and resurfacing by Lincolnshire County Council will commence in two sections at the north end of the A1073. This from the A1073-A16 roundabout to the Drain Bank junction, and at Cowbit from the junction with Stonegate (B1357) to Backgate. Morgan Est will also be using this opportunity to complete the construction of the new Crowland roundabout as part of the A1073 Spalding to Eye Improvement Scheme. Crowland Show
Saturday, 27th June, 2009. Snowden Fields, Crowland.

Another Show passed. And what a Show.
We are sure everyone would like to say a big thank you to the Show Committee members who volunteer their time and skills to the organisation of the show. Also to the small army of helpers who give up their weekend to... err... help out. Shows like this do not happen on their own. There is a vast amount of work and effort involved, not only in the planning but also in the implementation on the day, and the days leading up to Crowland´s big Saturday out.
Yes, we were all hoping that the day would bring out sparkling sunshine and a clear blue sky - especially having basked in overly warm sunshine over the preceding few days. We did hear that even the committee´s head of weather had booked clear skies. Sadly, and like the Military Re-enactment group, it failed to appear on this occasion. But the overcast sky did bring an added benefit in that the inside of the main marquee remained much more bearable for its occupants. The onset of rain by mid afternoon understandably drove greater numbers inside, no doubt to discover exhibitions and events they would probably not have noticed previously, much to the delight of the Women´s Institute and Community Playgroups.
If you would like to get involved in Crowland Show 2010 (now less than 12 months away) put a big note in your diary for the last Saturday in June 2010 and make contact - and you can do that by simply posting in the Crowland Links forum, or by sending an email to us here at crowlandshow@crowland-links.com

The Crowland Scalextric Club
Since the club started back in September, the attendance numbers have slowly increased and everyone involved is having a really great time.
David Rowlett, Crowland Scalextric Club organiser, told us that it's great to see children as young as three years old getting stuck in and having a go. "It's been very encouraging by all the support we have received, especially from the Scout Hut Committee and Crowland Links," said David.
"The club has taken nearly four months to get off the ground. Our aim is to run a self-funding club, with any profit put back into the club to provide new cars and, hopefully, some competition prizes when we get more established."
David's involvement with Scalextric started when he was a young boy, setting up a track in his bedroom. He got back into Scalextric about 3 years ago and is now looking to get younger people in the local region interested in racing. "Crowland seems to lack facilities for the younger generation", he said. "So I decided to form the Scalextric Club in order that families can come along and have some fun."
Comments about the new club have been very positive, so much so, that David has booked the Scout Hut up to the end of January, 2009. The club is already becoming self-funding and they have already purchased four new race cars to add to the club's racing fleet.
David goes on to say that the races run are often endurance competitions, where the race ends after a set length of time. "In our case, this is 3 miniutes. If you crash then a nice friendly race marshal will happily return your car to the track. If there are no marshals available then the competition becomes a crash and burn event, meaning that if you crash or go off the track then you are out of the competition."
If you would like to make comment or give suggestion about the club then you can do this in the Scalextric Group Forum.

1st Crowland Scout Group
Activities For All Ages
The 1st Crowland Scout Group re-formed in May 2005 after a 5-year break, and since then has been steadily growing in numbers.

Based at the Scout Hut in Snowden Fields, Crowland, the group has been involved in a number of activities over the past year. The Cub pack has taken part in a wide variety of activities. They were taught some basic first aid skills and also learned about safety in and around the home.
Their creative talents were also put to work making bat-boxes and posters promoting scouting - these were displayed at the Crowland Show in June. Into the summer and the group had lots of fun pond dipping, aided and supported by the Crowland Wildlife Group. They also tried their hands at taboganning [sledging] and climbing at Tallington Lakes - numerous activities with a lot of fun.

Crowland resident Jeff Beardwell has been involved with the group for just over a year as a leader in the Cub Pack. "I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, and found the time spent with the young people very rewarding," said Jeff.
"Adult help is essential to run a Scout group, and without helpers who are able to give their time voluntarily, the group would not exist."
There are many ways adults can get involved: as a leader-helper in any of the three sections, or as a member of the Group Executive Committee, helping with fundraising ideas. No previous skills or experience are necessary. Relevant training will be provided.
If anyone would like to volunteer, or requires further information, you can contact Jeff by email at jeffbeardwell (at) btinternet (dot) com or send him a private message (username “Baloo”) on the Crowland-Links Forums. You can also post in the "Village Green" forum (login to post).
