Road Resurfacing Work Gets Underway

After years of enduring pot-holes, bumps and cracks in the road surface along Abbey Walk, Chruch Lane and The Chase, local residents were pleased to see a complete road resurfacing project get underway. picture of workmen

Contractors working on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council (Boston and South Holland Highways Division), commenced work along roads adjacent to Crowland Abbey.

A local resident, who refused to be named, commented that the work was well overdue as previous attempts to make repairs were inadequate. "They tried to patch it up over the years, but never really made a proper job of it," he said. "Hopefully, this complete resurfacing should put an end to our problems."

Work on the roads is expected to last a few days. In the meantime, motorists are asked to take care and reduce speed in order to safely avoid personnel and machinery.

Action Amps: An Action Packed Career

Crowland resident Albert Thomson was a career soldier, who, after 18 years of military service, found himself thrown into the civilian way of life after being injured in conflict in March 2003. Albert and his family moved to Deeping St Nicholas in 2005, before moving to Crowland in April 2007.Picture of Albert Thomson

"Until 2003, I was a fully able, fit and active soldier, who had served in numerous conflicts from the Gulf War in 1990 to Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Kosovo," he told us. "But, unfortunately, at the start of the Iraq War in 2003, aged 33, I was hit several times by machine gun fire, resulting in horrific injuries along with the loss of my left leg above the knee."

Albert was hospitalised for 2 months, during which time he contemplated what the future might hold for himself and his family. Realising he was in charge of his own future, he thought of the idea of Action Amps (Amputee Casualty Simulations Ltd) in order to make a living for himself and other amputees.

"I introduced the concept of using amputees to enhance the training packages of our Armed Forces and Emergency Services by creating realistic casualty simulations. The Company was formed primarily to support and enhance the training packages that soldiers must go through prior to deployments to such places as Iraq and Afghanistan."

picture of action amps in simulated actionAlbert went on to say that amputees were featured in the first episode of the Ross Kemp in Afghanistan series on Sky One:

"Action Amps has been contacted by Film and TV companies keen to utilise the unique abilities of amputees, which we are happy to diversify into in order to give our members more opportunities to get involved in a wider range of activities."

Despite having no acting experience himself, Albert has personally been involved in extras work in the media industry for the last four years, securing parts in feature films and dramas. Recently he was involved in Midsomer Murders, which will hopefully be aired at Christmas.

Activities For All Ages

The 1st Crowland Scout Group

The 1st Crowland Scout Group re-formed in May 2005 after a 5-year break, and since then has been steadily growing in numbers.

First Crowland Scouts Group, climbing activity.

Based at the Scout Hut in Snowden Fields, Crowland, the group has been involved in a number of activities over the past year. The Cub pack has taken part in a wide variety of activities. They were taught some basic first aid skills and also learned about safety in and around the home.

Into the summer and the group had lots of fun pond dipping, aided and supported by the Crowland Wildlife Group. They also tried their hands at taboganning [sledging] and climbing at Tallington Lakes - numerous activities with a lot of fun.

Crowland resident Jeff Beardwell has been involved with the group for just over a year as a leader in the Cub Pack. "I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, and found the time spent with the young people very rewarding," said Jeff.

"Adult help is essential to run a Scout group, and without helpers who are able to give their time voluntarily, the group would not exist."

There are many ways adults can get involved: as a leader-helper in any of the three sections, or as a member of the Group Executive Committee, helping with fundraising ideas. No previous skills or experience are necessary. Relevant training will be provided.

If anyone would like to volunteer, or requires further information, you can contact Jeff by email at jeffbeardwell (at) btinternet (dot) com or send him a private message (username “Baloo”) on the Crowland-Links Forums. You can also post in the "Village Green" forum (login to post).

Scalextric Club

Scalextric Club Meetings Off To A Flying Start

Crowland's Scalextric Club meetings got underway on Sunday, 21st September and every fortnight since. The afternoon events, held at the Scout Hut in Snowden Fields, Crowland, have been well attended with a number of adults lending a hand.picture of the scalextric race track

Club organiser David Rowlett, assisted by "race marshall" Andrew Moore for the first meeting, was extremely pleased with the turnout. "For our first events, this is extremely encouraging", said David. "This has taken nearly four months to get off the ground. Our aim is to run a self-funding club, with any profit put back into the club to provide new cars and, hopefully, some competition prizes when we get more established."

David's involvement with Scalextric started when he was a young boy, setting up a track in his bedroom. He got back into Scalextric about 3 years ago, and is now looking to get younger people in the Crowland region interested. "Crowland seems to lack facilities for the younger generation", he said. "So I decided to form the Scalextric Club in order that families can come along and have some fun."

David invites people to make comments and give suggestions in the Scalextric Group Forum.picture of the starting lineup

The next club meeting will be held on Sunday, 16 November, 3pm to 5.30pm. at the Scout Hut, Snowden Fields, Crowland.

Affected by the Credit Crunch?

The rising price of energy, and the increasing price of food such as bread and dairy products, has left many with a sense of worry, especially those on fixed incomes, such as the elderly and those on benefits. For these people in particular the future may look bleak.
vincent van gough: on the edge of eternity

The political and global reasons causing the so-called credit crunch are often the least of people's concern as they look to see how they can make ends meet. The sense of desperation for some facing house repossession as their mortgaged property purchase becomes a millstone around the neck rather than the investment certainty they believed it to be.

The easy availability of credit has left many with a financial hangover, and those that lent took the profit and are moving on to other forms of money-making. It is now inevitable that many in the UK will have to change their habits; that the shop-and-spend culture goes into steep decline, and that the credit card consumer will just have to wait for their next "must-have" purchase.

If you have been hit by the current issues, and looking for help or advice, the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is a good place to start - it has support centres around the country. Follow the Read More link for more information...
